SEO settings

Customers often start product search by entering queries into search engines and portals. To ensure that they find exactly your shop, products and special offers, the relevant information has to be prepared and indicated optimally. Since the 4th version, the OXID eShop supports Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The SEO implementation automatically creates speaking URLs for categories and products. Thereby, reserved words and special characters are considered as well as different shop languages.

Shop operators only have to make some settings to define specific contents for the Search Engine Optimization. These are page title, URL structure and metadata. Contents can be defined in every shop language.

Page titel

The page title is still displayed in some browser title bars and used as bookmark or favorite when saving a page. Although the page title is almost invisible in the shop, it is of huge importance for search engines. Search engines extract information from the page title indicating which information can be found on a website. Except for the page title of the shop, the page titles are automatically generated from a product or category title and extended with a prefix and a suffix.

Example of a page title structure: OXID Surf and Kite Shop | Transport container THE BARREL | purchase online

Settings for the page title can be found in the section Master Settings -> Core Settings -> SEO. Make sure to select the desired language.

Title Prefix
Text placed before the generated part of the page title. Preferably, enter here your shop’s name. Demoshop example: OXID Surf and Kite Shop.

Title Suffix
Text attached to the generated part of the page title. Add here the characteristics identical for all shop pages. Demoshop example: purchase online.

Front Page Title
The page title text is specified for the start page. It should be a concise description of your online shop offer. Different from all other pages, the page title of the start page consist of a prefix and a defined text. The suffix is not used. Demoshop example: OXID Surf and Kite Shop | The online shop for water sports and summertime.

URL structure

“Speaking URLs” are also an important part of Search Engine Optimization. Instead of displaying URLs as parameters and cryptic values, the URL is rewritten and then shows the name of the category and product. That is good for search engines and certainly for visitors of your online shop.

Example of internally used URL:

Example for rewritten speaking URL:

Like the specifications for the page title, also the URLs are language-dependent. Make sure to select the desired language.

Default language for SEO URLs
In the URLs, no language codes (de, en, etc.) are used for the default language set here. To the URLs of the other languages, the corresponding language codes will be added.

SEO IDs Separator (e.g. “+”, “-“)
The separator will be used if category or product title consist of more than one word. It will be inserted into the URL instead of a space. The hyphen is the default separator.

SEO Suffix for differing Similar SEO URLs
If several products have the same title and belong to the same category, they would be assigned the same URL. To prevent this, the SEO suffix is attached. In this way, identical URLs are avoided. If you do not specify a SEO suffix, -oxid will be attached by default.

Characters which are replaced in SEO URLs
Certain special characters such as umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü), should not be used in URLs, as they could cause problems. The characters replacing the special characters are entered in the input field. The syntax is: special character => replacement character, for example Ü => Ue. Replacement characters are already set for the German language. If you want to add or supplement special characters and replacements, for example for an additional language, use a separate line for each.

Note: since shop version 4.7.0/5.0.0, the list of characters to be replaced in the URL by other characters (transliteration) is defined in the /application/translation/{local}/translit_lang.php file. The input area in the SEO tab has been removed.

Reserved Words (are automatically suffixed)
Certain URLs are fixed in the eShop, for example for opening the admin panel. A category named “admin” would also have the URL This category could not be opened. For this reason, the SEO suffix is automatically attached to such URLs. By default, the OXID eShop treats all directories of the shop – even added ones – as reserved words. You can enter additional reserved words in the input field.

Words which are ignored in automatic Creation of Meta-tags
If there are no individual meta tags available for products or categories, these information will be generated from the description. Words without any information value should be omitted then. All words listed in the input field will be ignored during the automatic generation.

Static URLs
Static URLs were defined for some particular pages, for example Contact and Newsletter. These replace the internal URLs with the different parameters. You can set new static URLs or edit already existing URLs, even in various languages.

Although metadata is not of significant importance for search engines anymore, it is possible to change its content. There is metadata for the start page as well as for products and categories. Metadata is wordings and terms provided as description or keywords with the respective site.

Demoshop example:

<meta name=”description” content=”All about watersports, sportswear and fashion.
Extensive product range including several trendy products. Fast shipping.”>

<meta name=”keywords” content=”kite, kites, kiteboarding, kiteboards, wakeboarding,
wakeboards, boards, beach, summer, water sports, fashion, style, shirts, jeans, accessories, special offers”>

Start page

The metadata for the start page of the shop can be entered in the Customer Info -> CMS Pages section. The CMS page “META description start page” contains the shop description and the CMS page “META keywords start page” includes the keywords.

Categories and products

The metadata for categories and products is automatically generated from their description. It can be overwritten by self-formulated descriptions and keywords for every single category or product. The metadata is entered in the SEO tab of the Categories or Products section.
